- What industry do I serve? (Semiconductor? Pharma? General manufacturing?)
- What's my annual volume and number of SKUs? (Bulk single chemical vs. dozens of specialty items)
- What's my biggest pain point? (Price volatility? Quality consistency? Regulatory compliance?)
If your answer to #3 is 'regulatory compliance' or 'process reliability', lean toward Scenario A or B – invest in a provider with integrated solutions (like Veolia's water+chemical approach). If your main concern is cost predictability for a single commodity like sodium hydroxide, Scenario C – but don't ignore hidden logistics costs.
One universal truth: a supplier who shows you all the fees upfront is more likely to be trustworthy throughout the relationship. I've switched two vendors in the past year solely because they started adding surprise charges. Transparency isn't just a nice-to-have – it's a practical filter.
To be fair, even transparent suppliers sometimes have legitimate additional costs (e.g., fuel surcharges). But they tell you before you order. That's the difference.
